“Take your things and clear out. You’re nobody here, and your name means nothing. The car is waiting downstairs, so let’s skip the long goodbyes.”
Igor’s words sounded sharp and utterly confident. Ksenia stood in the hallway, staring at two large plastic suitcases. Her clothes had been carelessly thrown into them. The exhaustion she had accumulated over the past few years weighed heavily on her shoulders.
She had spent so much time trying to save this marriage. She had turned a blind eye to his constant delays at work. She had endured his coldness and his regular complaints about the household. She had supported him when he did not have a penny in his pocket. And now he was simply throwing her out like a servant he had grown tired of.
Beside Igor stood a young woman with bright makeup. She looked Ksenia over arrogantly. Her entire appearance radiated complete superiority and certainty in her victory.
“You brought her here? Right in front of me?” Ksenia’s voice was steady, although inside her indignation was growing at such outrageous insolence.
“What do I have to be ashamed of?” Igor smirked and adjusted his expensive tie. “This is my territory. I am a successful man, the owner of a large logistics company. I have the right to live with the woman who inspires me to achieve new things.”
He possessively wrapped his arm around his companion’s waist. The young woman smiled with satisfaction and fixed her hair.
“And you drag me down,” her husband continued, looking at Ksenia with open contempt. “You’re boring. You don’t need anything except housework and saving money. Yulia is different. She is ambitious. She matches my status.”
“Your company?” Ksenia took a step forward. “Have you forgotten who gave you the money for the very first start? My mother sold a large plot of land outside the city. Only thanks to that were you able to rent your first warehouses and hire people.”
“That was pocket change!” Igor waved it off. “I built everything myself. My personal labor, my connections with suppliers, my sleepless nights. Your family has absolutely nothing to do with my success. I owe you nothing.”
Yulia confidently walked into the spacious room. With disgust, she picked up an elegant porcelain figurine that Ksenia had carefully chosen for the interior and snorted contemptuously.
“Igor, this ugly thing definitely belongs in the trash,” she said loudly, setting it aside. “Just like these old armchairs. They’ll have to be thrown out tomorrow. They don’t fit the modern design at all. We’ll order new ones, light leather. And we’ll change the curtains too.”
“Of course, darling. We’ll do everything the way you want,” he answered affectionately.
Then he turned back to his wife. His face became hard and uncompromising.
“Take your bags and go wherever you want. Yulia needs space for her things. I’m not going to waste my only day off on these arguments.”
Ksenia did not beg for mercy. She did not make a scene. She simply looked at the man with whom she had lived for ten years. He seemed completely strange and unfamiliar to her. His whole essence had now been reduced to money and ostentatious status.
At that moment, the elevator doors opened on the landing. Confident footsteps rang out. Nadezhda Ivanovna entered through the open apartment door.
Ksenia’s mother looked perfectly composed and calm. She cast an attentive glance over the suitcases, Igor, and his new companion.
“I see you’ve decided to arrange a move, Igor,” Nadezhda Ivanovna said evenly.
“You’ve come at the wrong time,” her son-in-law replied irritably. “Your daughter is leaving. I asked her to vacate my living space. Don’t make a scene. Just help her carry her things to the car.”
Nadezhda Ivanovna slowly opened her bag. Instead of lengthy explanations, she simply took out an official document with blue stamps and handed it to Igor.
“Your living space?” Ksenia’s mother slightly raised her eyebrows. “Here is a fresh extract from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities as of today. Do you see the ‘Founder’ line? You are no longer the only one there.”
Igor frowned, trying to read the dry legal lines. His showy confidence began to melt quickly.
“The apartment is listed on the balance sheet of the company you developed so diligently,” Nadezhda Ivanovna continued. “Six months ago, you began having serious financial difficulties. Behind your wife’s back, you took out loans and sold the controlling stake — fifty-one percent of the business shares.”
“I sold the stake to a major holding company from the capital! What do you have to do with it?” Igor crossed his arms over his chest, but clear anxiety flashed in his voice.
“That holding company belongs to me,” the words came out clearly and distinctly. “I hired competent lawyers. They carried out the deal through trusted representatives. I had long seen how you treated my daughter. I noticed your secret transfers and schemes. So I took the situation under my control and protected our initial investments.”
Igor recoiled. He tried to say something, but he could not utter a word from astonishment. His confused gaze moved from his mother-in-law to the documents and back again.
Yulia stopped inspecting the room. She came closer and looked at her companion with obvious concern.
“Igor, what is going on? What is she talking about?” the girl demanded. “You said you were the full owner!”
“You have been dismissed from the position of general director,” Nadezhda Ivanovna said firmly, paying no attention to Yulia at all. “The decision of the general meeting of participants was signed this morning. You no longer have access to the corporate accounts. This apartment is company property, and as a dismissed employee, you are obligated to vacate it immediately.”
“You have no right! I still have forty-nine percent! This is my business! I’ll hire the best lawyers!” Igor’s voice rose to a high pitch. He began waving his hands nervously.
“Your forty-nine percent was acquired during your marriage to my daughter,” Nadezhda Ivanovna calmly countered. “By law, half of that share belongs to Ksenia. So your real position is now far more modest than you are trying to present.”
Ksenia finally broke her silence. She did not unpack her things right there in the corridor. She simply pushed her suitcases back into the room, making it clear that she was not going anywhere.
“Leave,” she said. “But first return the car keys. It was also bought with company money.”
Igor threw his wife an angry look. He realized that he had suffered a crushing defeat. All his clever schemes had turned against him.
Yulia quickly assessed the situation. She understood that the man in front of her was rapidly losing his status, access to money, and elite housing. The girl silently turned around and quickly headed for the exit.
“Yulia, wait! We’ll sort everything out! I still have connections!” Igor shouted, rushing after her.
“Sort it out yourself,” she threw over her shoulder. “I don’t need other people’s problems. I didn’t waste my time just to live in a rented apartment.”
The elevator doors closed behind her. Igor remained standing alone in the middle of the corridor. Angrily, he threw the car keys onto the small cabinet, grabbed his light jacket, and ran out to the stairwell.
Exactly one month passed. Ksenia’s life settled into a new, calm rhythm. She no longer waited for her husband in the evenings. She no longer had to listen to his constant complaints or endure blatant disrespect in her own home.
In the morning, she arrived at the spacious office of the logistics company. Today, the first management meeting with the new team was taking place. Ksenia took the chairperson’s seat.
She carefully studied the financial reports, planned new areas of work, and spoke with department heads. The work absorbed her completely. It turned out that she had excellent business instincts and an ability to negotiate with people.
Her ex-husband tried to contact her a couple of times. He wrote long messages. He complained about Yulia’s betrayal, saying she had blocked him on the very first day. He asked for a second chance and begged her to return him to his position, at least as an ordinary sales manager.
Ksenia did not even finish reading those messages. She simply blocked his number. She had absolutely no interest in listening to the pitiful excuses of a man who had so easily betrayed his family for a fleeting illusion.
That evening, she returned to her bright apartment. She cooked a delicious seafood dinner. She turned on pleasant music and sat by the large window.
The city shimmered with bright evening lights. Ahead lay a great deal of interesting work and new ambitious tasks. But most importantly, there was deep peace in her soul.
She had defended her dignity. She had protected her future from a consumerist attitude. And that feeling of complete freedom was the most valuable thing she had gained in all the past years. Ksenia smiled at her thoughts and took a sip of cool water. Tomorrow would be a new, successful day.
