“Where are you going, I’m asking you?” the mother-in-law said in confusion when she saw the suitcases by the door. But her daughter-in-law only smiled.
“I’ve separated our accounts for good!” she told her husband after seeing the late-night transfer to his sister.
“My sister and her daughter are moving in with us for a year, and don’t argue,” my husband announced, presenting it to me as a settled fact.
“Your son ran off with a younger woman? Then go to her for money!” I cut off my former mother-in-law before she could finish speaking.
“Come back from your vacation, Mom isn’t feeling well,” my husband wrote. I nodded—and returned exactly on the day of my scheduled flight.
