One thing that they were kind of anxious about was whether they would be able to tell them apart, whether they would look so much alike that they would have to look for tiny differences in order to tell one from the other.
Of course, once they were told they would be a boy and a girl, they knew things would be much easier for them, but they had no idea how different their kids would be until days after they were born.
However, this soon started to change, and Azirah started getting darker and darker.
“Azirah was slightly darker at birth but you couldn’t really tell. Now as weeks have gone on she has gotten to the point where she’s darker than her dad,” mom Chantelle told Metro. “Every few weeks friends and family still say they cant believe it,” she added.
The fact that at least one of the babies has darker skin color didn’t come as a surprise to the couple. They both have mixed race identities, so it was possible to have a baby with a dark complexion.
Chantelle’s grandfather from her mother’s side was Nigerian, while her partner is half Jamaican and half Scottish.
But giving birth to twins that don’t share the same skin color is a completely different thing! In fact, experts agree that it is as rare as one in 500.
“Genetically a mixed race and European couple, who are expecting twins, have about a one in 500 chance that they are of different skin colours. This chance only applies to non-identical twins, because they are conceived from two eggs fertilised by two sperms.”
Chantelle explained that the twins, although they don’t share the same characteristics with one being darker with brown eyes and the other having lighter skin color and green-blue eyes, just love being next to each other.
They enjoy lying in bed one next to the other, they want to touch each other, and they have even started to smile more when they are together.
As for how people react when they see her carrying the twins around?
Well, they are definitely surprised. Some of them even ask if they are both hers.
“People just stop and say ‘oh my god’, they just look totally different. I’ve had people ask ‘are they both yours?’” Chantelle shared.
Whatever their skin color, Chantelle says that she wouldn’t have it any other way. She likes how different her babies look and she absolutely loves how unique these twins are.
