Much to my disappointment, I was not born with any musical talent. I don’t have an ear for notes and tone, and in fact, I’m basically tone deaf. But like most kids, I had no idea until I was an older child that my singing and any other musical endeavors I attempted were absolutely terrible. I still feel bad for my parents who had to ride in the car with me while I belted out songs along with the radio, thinking I sounded like any one of the great divas: Cher, Bette Midler, Whitney Houston, and even Celine Dion. I actually sounded like some sort of tortured animal.
In addition to my singing endeavors, if you can even call it’s singing, I begged my parents for piano lessons. They obliged and even purchased a lovely little upright piano for the basement. I practiced and practiced and dutifully attended my lessons—and I was terrible. But, at least no one had to listen to me sing.
Steve Harvey hosts a television show, called “Little Big Shots”, that features all kinds of talented children. There are dancers, little comedians, and of course singers. Watching the show, it seems as if each child who takes the stage is more precocious and talented than the last. However, when 13-year-old Mia appeared on the show, she stood out with her impressive performance of Beyonce’s “Listen”.
The tiny teenager from Croatia, with her adorable pink dress and chunky glasses, opened her mouth to sing and had the rapt attention of the studio audience and I’m sure, everyone watching at home. She blew everyone away with her voice and the undeniable passion and emotion. This little pro performed like someone at least twice her age.
