Teen’s slow shag dance suddenly transforms into a fast paced routine that lights up the room

Since its inception in 1984, the Carolina Shag has proudly held the title of South Carolina’s official state dance.
This dance isn’t just a series of steps; it’s a rich part of South Carolina’s heritage.

To keep this tradition alive and kicking, the Junior Shag Dance Team, a dedicated nonprofit, works tirelessly to ensure the Carolina Shag remains a vibrant part of the dance scene.

From its early days, the dance has transformed significantly.

The dance’s roots can be traced back to Myrtle Beach in the 1930s.
Initially, it was a blend of the Charleston and Collegiate Shag, featuring steps like the Cuban Step, Shuffle, and Twinkle.

Initially known as “beach dancing,” the Carolina Shag was synonymous with the lively beach club pavilions of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

These venues, with their worn exteriors and wooden dance floors, were the epicenters of teenage rebellion and dance.
The Pad, in particular, became an iconic spot.

The shag was more than just a dance; it was a cultural phenomenon, attracting youths from across the Carolinas, drawn to its aura of daring and excitement.

The dance’s popularity waned in the 1960s but saw a resurgence in the 1970s.
Since then, it has evolved into what we now know as the modern Carolina Shag.

Today’s Carolina Shag is a fusion of East and West Coast Swing styles, characterized by intricate footwork led by the dancer, with the partner often mirroring these movements.
It’s a dance that combines elegance with energy.
